Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Live Scan rolling/processing fee is $31 (subject to change and includes live scan fingerprinting, appointment, data entry, credit card online, credit card charge, 8016 Forms, and track transaction status).

CAL – DOJ and FBI FEES: Varies from $0 to $81 depending on the Application Type.

All you need is your government issued ID, a method of payment, and the “Request for Live Scan Service” form you may have received from the employer or agency who requested your live scan.

Please note that often you are asked to bring three copies of the same form. The first copy is kept by your live scan operator, second copy is yours, and third copy goes to the agency requesting fingerprinting, once it is completed. You will need to fill out the middle portion of the form, which asks for your personal information.

If you don’t have the form but know the name of the agency requiring the live scan, we conveniently have forms that you may download down below.

ACCEPTABLE FORMS OF ID

Valid Photo Identification

The California Department of Justice (DOJ) requires Live Scan Operators to accept only current, valid, and unexpired picture identification as the primary identification.

Primary Forms of Identification

Acceptable Primary forms of photo identification include any of the following:

  • State-issued driver’s license*
  • U.S. Passport or U. S Passport Card
  • Federal Government Personal Identity Verification Card (PIV)
  • Uniformed Services Identification Card
  • Department of Defense Common Access Card
  • Foreign Passport with Appropriate Immigration Document(s) (e.g., Form I-94)
  • USCIS – Permanent Resident Card (I-551)
  • USCIS – Employment Authorization Card (I-766)
  • Federal, state, or local government agency ID card with photograph
  • U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Card
  • Canadian driver’s license

* For those applicants without a license, a state identification card may be presented if the state identification card standards are the same as for the driver’s license.

Secondary Forms of Identification

In the absence of a primary form of identification, an applicant shall provide at least two of the following forms of secondary identification AND at least two additional forms of the supporting documentation that follows:

  • State Government Issued Certificate of Birth
  • U.S. Tribal or Bureau of Indian Affairs Identification Card
  • Native American tribal document
  • Social Security Card
  • Court Order for Name Change/Gender Change/Adoption/ Divorce
  • Marriage Certificate (Government Certificate Issued)
  • U.S. Government Issued Consular Report of Birth Abroad
  • Draft record
  • School ID with photograph (minimum age 7 years old, or transaction will be rejected by DOJ) *
  • Certificate of Citizenship (N560)
  • Replacement Certificate of Citizenship (N-561)
  • Certificate of Naturalization (N550)
  • Replacement Certificate of Naturalization (N-570)

* If parent or guardian is vouching for student, enter the form of ID shown by parent or guardian only on the live scan fingerprinting log your agency keeps. DO NOT enter the ID number into the student’s live scan transaction.

Supporting Documentation for Secondary Forms of Identification

NOTE: When validating the authenticity of secondary forms of identification, the information must be supported by at least two of the following supplemental documents:

  • Utility Bill (Address)
  • Jurisdictional Voter Registration Card
  • Vehicle Registration Card/Title
  • Paycheck Stub with Name/Address*
  • Jurisdictional Public Assistance Card

Your fingerprinting will be submitted to Cal-DOJ immediately after fingerprinting.
Typical turn-around time from Cal-DOJ is only a few hours. Virtually all of the fingerprint background check transactions are completed within 48 hours.
However, occasionally, transactions can take up to a few weeks. For example, older (age) applicant’s transactions can often take longer due to poorer fingerprint quality or paper based fingerprint records which requires manual handling.

California Department of Justice typically sends the result within 48 hours. However, it can take up to a few weeks. After 2 weeks, visit Cal-DOJ’s Live Scan status website https://applicantstatus.doj.ca.gov/ to check on the status of your transaction. You will be asked to enter the live scan assigned 10-digit Applicant Tracking identifier (ATI) for your transaction along with your birth date. If the Cal-DOJ cannot locate your transaction, it does not mean they did not receive it. Generally, it means that they have not completed their processing. Wait one more weeks and try again. If after 3 weeks there is still no status, please contact support@applicantservices.com for further assistance. When emailing support please include your ATI number, your name, and date of your Live Scan transaction.

Less than 2% of the Applicants will be rejected due to poor fingerprint image quality. If you received a rejection notification, your first resubmission is free when the following requirements are met:

⦁ Must complete the Resubmission within 30 days from the original transaction (we recommend 14 days).
⦁ Must reschedule with the Original Live Scan Location to perform the Resubmission.
⦁ Rejection must be caused by poor fingerprint quality. If you entered the data incorrectly, you must initiate and pay for a NEW transaction.
⦁ We recommend that you apply ample lotion to your hands throughout the day for one week prior to returning to the Live Scan location for resubmission.

If received two rejection letters, you will need to undergo the Name Check process. Please visit:
